January & February Diversity Announcements

January 21 is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day; visit The King Center to learn more about Dr. King's legacy, social justice and civil rights in America. January 21 is also Armenian Martyr's Day in remembrance of the million Armenians who died during the Turkish massacre. Visit the Armenian National Institute to learn more. January 27 is the International Day of Commemoration in remembrance of victims of the Holocaust. On this day, we ask you to visit the Simon Wiesenthal Center and be mindful of this quote: "For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing" - Simon Wiesenthal.

In February, we celebrate Black History Month to offer tribute to the peoples of the African Diaspora. February 1 is National Freedom Day, a day that celebrates the abolishment of slavery in the United States in 1865. Visit the Black Inventor Online Museum to learn more about inventions created by African-American inventors. In some cultures, February marks the beginning of spring and renewal. Imbolc, a Gaelic festival, is celebrated on February 2 and Setsubun-sai, a Japanese tradition marking the day before spring, is celebrated on February 3. Visit the Gaelic Athletic Association to learn more about Gaelic football and hurling. Also in February, two important dates are celebrated in Buddhist communities including Nirvana Day (February 8) in honor of the death of Buddha and Sangha Day (February 19) to commemorate the gathering of enlightened monks.
