CC-AASP Status Categories and Policy Regarding Expiration, Reinstatement, and Reactivation of CC-AASP Status


There are four CC-AASP status categories: Active, Inactive, Mentor Only, and Emeritus.

1. Active Status | Flow Chart
Definition of Active Status: The certification status of Certified Consultants (CCs) who pay their annual membership dues and annual CC dues and recertify every 5 years will be considered active.

  • CCs on active status who do not pay their annual membership dues or CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be required to pay their membership and CC dues plus late fees ($25 for membership; $10 for CC) by September 1st of that same year to maintain their active status. 

  • CCs on active status are required to submit a recertification application every 5 years to maintain their active status. CCs who do not apply for recertification by the September 1st deadline of their recertification year will be required to submit their recertification application plus a $10 late fee by the February 1st application deadline of the following year to maintain their active status.


Expiration and Reinstatement of Active Status
The certification status of CCs on active status who do not pay their annual membership and annual CC dues for one year or fail to recertify every 5 years will be considered expired.

  • CCs on active status who fail to pay annual membership and CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be placed on inactive status. CCs may reactivate their active status by submitting a  plus a $25 reactivation fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues and late fees by September 1st of that same year. The certification status of CCs who fail to reactivate their active status by September 1st will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired active status by submitting a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues and late fees by February 1st of the following year. 

  • CCs on active status who do not submit a recertification application by the late February 1st application deadline following their recertification year will be placed on inactive status. CCs may reactivate their active status by submitting a recertification application plus a $10 late fee and a Request to Reactivate Certification Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee by the September 1st application deadline of that same year. The certification status of CCs who fail to reactivate their active status by September 1st will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired active status by submitting a recertification application plus a $10 late fee and a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee by the February 1st application deadline of the following year. 

  • CCs who fail to reinstate their expired active status by the deadlines outlined above and desire to be designated as a CC again will be required to reapply for certification, meet the current certification requirements, and complete the required hours of continuing education for each 5-year recertification cycle that passed since their active status expired.


2. Inactive StatusFlow Chart
Definition of Inactive Status: CCs may request to deactivate their certification status for any type of professional or personal reason. The certification status of CCs who are granted such a request will be considered inactive. Examples of CCs who may request to deactivate their certification status include those who temporarily suspend their consulting practice or mentoring due to moving into a university administrative position, undergoing a medical illness, or experiencing a life event change.

  • To be placed on inactive status CCs must submit the Request to Change Certification Status form. While on inactive status CCs must pay annual membership dues and must agree to not practice or provide mentorship as a CC. 

  • CCs on inactive status will not be required to pay annual CC dues nor recertify every 5 years. CCs on inactive status who do not pay their annual membership dues by the February 15th deadline will be required to pay their membership dues plus the $25 late fee by September 1st of that same year to maintain their inactive status. 

  • CCs may remain on inactive status indefinitely as long as they continue to pay annual membership dues and agree to not practice or provide mentorship as a CC. CCs will be required to submit a request to remain on inactive status by September 1st of the last year of each 5-year recertification cycle to maintain their inactive status. CCs who do not request to remain on inactive status by the September 1st application deadline of their recertification year will be required to submit their request to remain on inactive status plus a $10 late fee by the February 1st application deadline of the following year to maintain their inactive status.


Reactivation of Active Status
CCs on inactive status who wish to return to active status may do so by submitting a Request to Reactivate Certification Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee. If, while being on inactive status, a CC's recertification year passes, the required hours of continuing education must be completed prior to the CC's return to active status.

Expiration and Reinstatement of Inactive Status
The certification status of CCs on inactive status who do not pay their annual membership dues for one year or fail to request to remain on inactive status every 5 years will be considered to be expired.

  • The certification status of CCs on inactive status who fail to pay annual membership dues by the February 15th deadline will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired inactive status by submitting a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee and paying all outstanding annual membership dues and late fees by September 1st of that same year. 

  • The certification status of CCs on inactive status who do not submit a request to remain on inactive status by the late February 1st application deadline following their recertification year will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their inactive status by submitting a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee by the September 1st application deadline of that same year. 

  • CCs who fail to reinstate their expired inactive status by the deadlines outlined above and desire to be designated as a CC again will be required to reapply for certification, meet the current certification requirements, and complete the required hours of continuing education for each 5-year recertification cycle that passed since their inactive status expired.


3. Mentor Only StatusFlow Chart
Definition of Mentor Only status: CCs may request to reduce their certification status to serve as mentors of applicants pursuing certification status but not practice as a CC. The certification status of CCs who are granted such a request will be considered mentor only status. An example of CCs who may request to reduce their certification status include those who suspend their consulting practice yet elect to continue to mentor students pursuing certification as part of their university faculty role.

  • CCs may request that their certification status be placed on mentor only status by submitting the Request to Change Certification Status form. While on mentor only status CCs must pay annual membership dues, pay reduced annual CC dues of $15, and agree to serve as a mentor only and not practice as a CC.

  • CCs on mentor only status who do not pay their annual membership dues or reduced CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be required to pay their membership and reduced CC dues plus late fees ($25 for membership; $10 for CC) by September 1st of that same year to maintain their mentor only status.

  • CCs on mentor only status will be required to submit a recertification application every 5 years, request to remain on mentor only status when they recertify, complete the required hours of continuing education, and attend only 1 AASP conference during each 5-year recertification cycle. CCs who do not apply for recertification by the September 1st deadline of their recertification year will be required to submit their recertification application plus a $10 late fee by the February 1st application deadline the following year to maintain their mentor only status.


Reactivation of Active Status
CCs who wish to return to active status may do so by submitting a Request to Reactivate Certification Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee.

Expiration and Reinstatement of Mentor Only Status
The certification status of CCs on mentor only status who do not pay their annual membership dues and reduced annual CC dues for one year or fail to recertify every 5 years will be considered expired.

  • CCs on mentor only status who fail to pay annual membership and reduced CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be placed on inactive status. CCs may reactivate their mentor only status by submitting a Request to Reactivate Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues by September 1st of that same year. The certification status of CCs who fail to reactivate their mentor only status by September 1st will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired mentor only status by submitting a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues and late fees by February 1st of the following year.

  • CCs on mentor only status who do not submit a recertification application by the late February 1st application deadline following their recertification year will be placed on inactive status. CCs may reactivate their expired mentor only status by submitting a recertification application plus a $10 late fee and a Request to Reactivate Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee by the September 1st application deadline of that same year. The certification status of CCs who fail to reactivate their mentor only status by September 1st will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired mentor only status by submitting a recertification application plus a $10 late fee form and a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee by the February 1st application deadline of the following year.

  • CCs who fail to reinstate their expired mentor only status by the deadlines outlined above and desire to be designated as a CC again will be required to reapply for certification, meet the current certification requirements, and complete the required hours of continuing education for each 5-year recertification cycle that passed since their mentor only status expired.


4. Emeritus StatusFlow Chart
Definition of Emeritus Status: CCs who no longer intend to serve as mentors of applicants pursuing certification status or practice as a CC may request to deactivate their certification status. The certification status of CCs who are granted such a request will be considered emeritus. An example of CCs who may request to deactivate their certification status include those who permanently suspend their consulting practice and mentoring of students due to their decision to retire from their university faculty position yet choose to remain active as a member of AASP.

  • CCs may request that their certification status be placed on emeritus status by submitting the Request to Change Certification Status form. While on emeritus status CCs must pay annual membership dues, pay reduced annual CC dues of $10, and agree to not practice or provide mentorship as a CC. CCs on emeritus status are not required to recertify.

  • CCs on emeritus status who do not pay their annual membership dues or reduced CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be required to pay their membership and reduced CC dues plus late fees ($25 for membership; $10 for CC) by September 1st of that same year to maintain their emeritus status.

The certification status of CCs on emeritus status who do not pay their annual membership dues and reduced annual CC dues for one year will be considered expired.

  • CCs on emeritus status who fail to pay annual membership and reduced CC dues by the February 15th deadline will be placed on inactive status. CCs may reactivate their emeritus status by submitting a Request to Reactivate Status form plus a $25 reactivation fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues and late fees by September 1st of that same year. The certification status of CCs who fail to reactivate their emeritus status by September 1st will be considered expired. CCs may reinstate their expired emeritus status by submitting a Request to Reinstate Certification Status form plus a $25 reinstatement fee and paying all outstanding annual membership and CC dues and late fees by February 1st of the following year.

  • CCs who fail to reinstate their expired emeritus status by the deadlines outlined above and desire to be designated as a CC again will be required to reapply for certification, meet the current certification requirements, and complete the required hours of continuing education for each 5-year recertification cycle that passed since their emeritus status expired.
