Bonnie Berger, Past President
Bonnie G. Berger, Ed.D., is a professor in the School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies at Bowling Green State University in Ohio where she has served as Director for the past 10 years. Before coming to Bowling Green, Bonnie was a professor and associate dean in the School of Physical and Health Education and the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming and a professor at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate sport and exercise psychology for over 30 years, Dr. Berger has written extensively on topics related to sport and exercise psychology. She has published two books and more than 75 refereed journal articles, book chapters, and articles for popular magazines in the areas of physical activity and the quality of life, mood alteration, stress management, social physique anxiety, and exercise enjoyment. Her books include Free Weights for Women (Simon and Schuster) and Foundations of Exercise Psychology (with David Pargman and Bob Weinberg; Fitness Information Technology). Bonnie also has delivered more than 125 professional lectures nationally and internationally in Canada, England, Denmark, Portugal, Greece, Thailand, Singapore, and Australia. In addition, she was a Visiting Research Professor at the University of Western Australia during the fall of 1989, 1990, and 2006, and at Edith Cowan University in 2001 in Perth, Western Australia.
Bonnie is a founding member of Division 47, Exercise and Sport Psychology, of the American Psychological Association and a charter member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity from which she received the Outstanding Dissertation Award. She is a fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and also is a fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Within the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), Bonnie is a charter member as well as a fellow, and certified consultant. Since participating in the inaugural AASP conference in 1987 on Jekyll Island, Bonnie has been a frequent AASP participant and presenter. She has served as chair of the Certification Review Committee and the Health Psychology Section and also as a member of the Ethics Committee, Dorothy Harris Memorial Award Committee, and Executive Board. Currently, Bonnie is a member of the Joint ACSM/AASP Exam Development Committee in Physical Activity and abstract reviewer for the annual conference. She serves on the editorial board of AASP’s journal, the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, and formerly served as the exercise and health section editor. Bonnie also has served on the editorial boards of Quest, the International Journal of Sport Psychology and The Sport Psychologist.
Bonnie Berger earned her B.S. degree from Wittenberg University and her M.A. and Ed.D. with specializations in sport psychology and motor learning, from Columbia University. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, visiting with family and friends, and exercising. A former competitive swimmer, Bonnie participates in swimming and weight training on a regular basis and skis as often as possible.
